In his “matter paintings”, Tàpies mixes pigment and varnish with unconventional materials, including marble dust and sand, to create dense, wall-like surfaces that are both blank and teasingly mysterious. He also frequently included cruciform shapes.

His graphic works are noted for their cryptic and spontaneous effects. This painter, sculptor and art theorist became one of the most famous European artists of his generation.
